There are many times when things go wrong in our lives for various reasons. During such moments, we can choose to take responsibility and make things work or shift the blame. Life can indeed be harsh at times; for example, when our close friends reject us or treat us unkindly, or when circumstances just seem to be against us. During such moments, a persistent pain can settle deep in our hearts. It’s easy to see ourselves as victims of circumstances at such moments, having been wronged by others, or defeated by their actions or inactions.
The Victim Mindset
A victim mentality is one centered on a fatalistic worldview. An individual with such a mindset has surrendered their lives to fate. Whatever will be will be is the attitude that guides such a mind. One often feels helpless in the face of the events unfolding in one’s life. They feel like they have lost control, as if life just happens to them. People focus on their pains rather than their purpose, on their wounds rather than their victories. While it’s true you could be deeply hurt, the wounds keep you bound; instead of stepping into God’s plan for your life, you live in the shadow of what happened (Jeremiah 29:11).
In John 5:1-9, Jesus asked the man at the pool of Bethesda if he wanted to be made well. However, instead of saying yes, the man began to narrate that there was no one to help him into the pool for healing. That’s a good example of a victim mentality in the Bible. Always pointing to who did not come through for you, who didn’t care, or who left you. We have many young people today looking up to their uncles, cousins, brothers, or even parents rather than to God, who gives his blessings without adding sorrow (Proverbs 10:22).
Stop Blaming. Stop Waiting. Stop Replaying.
God is calling us to see ourselves for who we are in him. Instead of entertaining the man’s excuses, Jesus commanded him to get up, pick up his mat, and walk away. It was a call to forget the side shows and focus on the Savior who heals right in front of him. The victim mentality will keep you waiting for other people to clean up your mess or address your issues. Your victory, however, begins when you stop placing your life in other people’s hands and surrender to Christ, allowing him to restore you. As children of God, we are not called to live as victims of our circumstances, given that God has created us intentionally and purposefully. The power of Christ transforms victims into victors. By God’s grace, we move from defeat to dominion, from sorrow to strength, and from a place of being hurt to that of healing. The Bible says that we are more than conquerors through Christ. Thus no matter what life throws at us, we are destined to rise (Romans 8:37). In fact, even evil things that happen to us eventually work out for our good (Romans 8:28). Therefore, it is time to stop, blaming others, waiting for help from humans, replaying what happened and look up to Christ, the author and perfector of our faith (Hebrews 12:2).
The Doorway to Freedom
One of the strongest chains that holds people hostage to a victim mentality is unforgiveness. God has given us the example of himself in forgiveness and calls us to forgive as he has forgiven us (Ephesians 4:31-32). Forgiveness does not mean ignoring what happened and pretending it never happened. It’s refusing to let what happened take away our peace and rule our future. It is renouncing our right to revenge and entrusting the entire matter to God, who is known to restore lives. It takes divine strength to forgive those who don’t deserve it, as it happened with Stephen. While being stoned to death by his enemies, he still prayed for their forgiveness (Acts 7:59-60). Forgiveness closes the door to victimhood and opens the door to victory.
Taking Back Your God-given Identity
While victims look at what others did or did not do for them, victors focus on what God is doing for them. For believers, our identity is to be firmly rooted in Christ, not in our pain. Instead of viewing yourself as the abandoned one, shift your perspective to being the chosen one. The Bible says that we are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, and God’s special possession (1 Peter 2:9). What Christ did for us on the cross should define our lives, not our past, our pains, or even our problems. Jesus legitimized the stories of the patriarchs because they all pointed to him in some way (Matthew 1:1-2). Even people who might have been considered worthless in society, such as Tamar, Rahab, and Bathsheba, are remembered for their inclusion in the genealogy of Christ. As our lives begin with Christ today, they become significant because we acknowledge who Christ is in our lives.
Walking in Victory
If we shall live in victory, there must be a renewal of our minds (Romans 12:2). We cannot think like a victim and live like a victor. The Bible says that as a man thinketh in his heart so is he (Proverbs 23:7). For our minds to be renewed, we need to align our thinking to God’s word (Philippians 4:8). The devil desires for us to stay stuck, fearful, blaming others, wounded, and bitter. The Bible, however, calls us to forget what is behind and press forward to the mark of the high calling (Philippians 3:13-14). It is impossible to push forward while our eyes are fixed on the past. Our destiny lies ahead. We have only a few years left on this side of eternity, and we cannot waste them mourning the past.
You may have been hurt, but you are not hopeless; you may have been broken, but you are not beyond repair; you may have suffered rejection, but to God, you are still the chosen one. Christ’s finished work on the cross must remain your victory banner. As he conquered shame, death, sin, and rejection, so will you, by his grace.
