How to Live Wisely

The world is constantly offering us its version of wisdom: pursue wealth, seek comfort, and follow your heart. On the other hand, God’s Word is telling us a different, yet more wholesome narrative. According to God’s Word, “the wisdom of this world is folly with God” (1 Corinthians 3:19). True wisdom is not found in human reasoning but is a gift from the Lord (Proverbs 9:10), for God has made foolish the wisdom of the world (1 Corinthians 1:20). How then can we live wisely in a world filled with distraction and deception?

The Beginning of Wisdom

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom…,” Proverbs 9:10 reminds us. The most defining reality about those who fear God is that they are full of wisdom. This kind of fear of God is not the avoidant type, like what Adam and Eve had after sinning before God. The fear of God that results in wisdom is one of reverence, awe, honor, and love for the LORD that humbles us before his holiness and sovereignty. To fear the Lord is to acknowledge God’s authority over every aspect of our lives. Proverbs 1:7 states, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.”

Knowledge is having facts and information, while wisdom is the proper application of knowledge. It’s possible for one to have great knowledge yet lack wisdom, leading them to make foolish choices. Knowledge guided by godly wisdom results in a life that glorifies God (Proverbs 3:13-14). It is practical righteousness applied to daily life.

Seeking Wisdom from God’s Word

Worldly wisdom is found in many sources, such as self-help books, podcasts, philosophy, cultural trends, and other areas of interest. However, godly wisdom, which is true wisdom, is only found in the Word of God. Psalm 119:105 declares, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” If we desire to live wisely, then we must immerse ourselves in Scripture, allowing it to shape our thoughts, decisions, and actions. “The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple,” Psalm 19:7 assures. James 1:5 reminds us that, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.”

God’s wisdom is revealed through his Word and by the help of the Spirit (Romans 11:33). Unlike human wisdom, which is often limited and flawed, God’s wisdom is perfect, infinite, and beyond human comprehension (Isaiah 55:8).

Making Wise Decisions

Wisdom is not merely theoretical but practical and should be evident in our daily lives. Paul, in Ephesians 5:15-16, exhorts us to look carefully at how we walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time because the days are evil. Every choice—how we spend our time, the company we keep, the words we speak—reflects either wisdom or folly. We are called to walk in wisdom by submitting every aspect of our lives to Christ and making decisions that honor him.

Wisdom also transforms those who faithfully seek it. “The wise of heart will receive commandments, but a babbling fool will come to ruin,” Proverbs 10:8 cautions. Wisdom humbles us, increases our discernment, and guards us from sin. James 3:13 explains, “Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom”. True wisdom is not arrogant but produces a life of obedience, humility, and godliness. It is not merely knowing but applying it with the fear of the Lord that brings true wisdom (Proverbs 9:10). When knowledge is rooted in divine wisdom, it leads to righteousness, discernment, and a heart aligned with God’s will (James 3:17). Such wisdom directs our steps, ensuring that our learning and decisions bear good fruit and reflect God’s righteousness (Colossians 1:9-10).

The Ultimate Wisdom: Christ Crucified

Ultimately, all godly wisdom must point to Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 1:24 tells us that Christ is “the power of God and the wisdom of God.” The world may see the gospel as foolishness, but to those who are being saved, it is the very wisdom of God. To live wisely is to live in and for Christ, forsaking all else and following Him wholeheartedly. May we be found faithful, walking in true wisdom that leads to eternal life.
