Biblical Insight for Handling Stress

Stress, a natural response in human beings to life’s troubling issues, is among the things we battle with time and again. It results from many things that cause physical, emotional, spiritual, and social strain. In stressful situations, we become anxious and experience lots of discomfort. The Bible provides us with practical insights on handling stressful situations that we can all benefit from.

What Are Your Stressors?

Identifying our stressors is the first step to addressing our problems. Some stressors have a quick and easy way out, while others may require one to adjust their lifestyle, when little can be done to alleviate them. Stressors can interfere with our day-to-day functioning as they impact our mental well-being.

  1. Past events: Things that happened in the past, like the death of a loved one, can lead to deep grief and stress in our lives. Issues like major injuries or sickness, loss of jobs, divorce, and past traumas contribute to stress. The past has the potential to affect our present if not dealt with.
  2. Current events: Some factors that may lead to stress include financial worries, relationship issues, workplace pressures, health concerns, and significant life changes that disrupt our regular routines.
  3. Fears of the future: There are also many issues related to the future that may be sources of stress for us. Among the worries of young people is economic instability. The Gen Z population is particularly concerned about climate change and its potential impact on life, as well as technological advancements and their ability to keep pace with these developments.

How The Stressors are Affecting You

Stressful situations have a wide range of effects on our bodies, which are constantly communicating with us, informing us where there is a problem that needs attention. We need to listen carefully to our bodies and act accordingly.

  1. Emotionally: When stress becomes too much in our lives, we may sink into depression. When our lives become filled with so much worry, it becomes difficult to concentrate on our day-to-day activities. This can sometimes lead to emotional outbursts, anger, and a sense of being overwhelmed and unable to cope.
  2. Physically: Increased stress can lead to various illnesses like high blood pressure, weight gain, diabetes, headaches, ulcers, among others.
  3. Spiritually: Stressors can cause moral issues that affect our relationship with God and others. Examples are stealing, orgies, drug and substance abuse, spiritual distress, prayerlessness, isolating oneself from the fellowship of believers, questioning one’s belief, pornography, among others.
  4. Socially: Stress can affect our behaviors and relationships significantly. Such behaviors, as those mentioned in the ’emotionally’ section above, may lead to isolation from loved ones and friends. This can then lead to greater stress and feelings of rejection.

Biblical Examples of Stressful Events

  1. David: Having gone through so much, he went on to record his feelings in the Psalms. Many of David’s Psalms emerge from a place of vulnerability, unfiltered sorrow, and struggle with God’s sovereignty, yet he still acknowledges God’s goodness in his life. Among the Psalms David wrote are Psalms 13, 42, 44, 130, among others.
  2. Job: Having lost many things that mattered to him, Job moves from being the greatest man in the East (Job 1:3) to one to be pitied in a very short time. Such a significant loss could lead to great stress, making it very hard to respond like Job unless we worship from a place of conviction rather than convenience.
  3. Moses: He wondered how to lead the Israelites as he thought that task was too overwhelming for him. He felt inadequate, and God had to take him through a series of events to convince him about his task (Exodus 4:1-10).
  4. Elijah: The feeling of being all alone and having no one to stand with you can be very depressing. Elijah reached out to God to describe his feelings in 1 Kings 19:10. He felt alone against an entire nation of ungodly people. Our current generation, often described as treacherous and rebellious, places us in a space where one may feel like they are the only one standing to defend the truth.

Biblical Insights to Handling Stress

God has not left us as orphans, and neither did he create the world and isolate himself from it. The Bible indeed offers great insights to help us overcome any situation we may face. The world we live in comes with all the packages of both good and evil. Only in heaven will our pain be lifted from within us completely (Revelation 21:3-4). Sin and its effects are in play in our world, and only God can rescue us. I have listed some of the biblical insights on handling stress below.

  1. The Sovereignty of God: God has always revealed himself in the scriptures as one in control. No situation goes unnoticed. He controls both times and seasons to serve his desired end. He uses tough times to teach us to rely on him (2 Corinthians 1:8-11). The scriptures also note that he works out all things for the good of those who love him and are called according to his purpose (Romans 8:28). Believing that God is in control helps one to develop some peace of mind, even as they work to address their issues.
  2. The role of prayer: The scriptures remind us not to be anxious about anything, but to take everything to God in prayer (Philippians 4:6). Prayer is a profound spiritual discipline that helps bring us peace, even in the midst of a storm. Prayer makes individuals surrender their issues to a greater power than themselves. It allows one to process their thoughts and emotions as they share their pain with God.
  3. The role of the Christian community: When Peter was in prison, the church was earnestly praying for him (Acts 12:5). The Christian community plays a crucial role in offering moral, emotional, and spiritual support to those going through a stressful moment. There is wisdom in being part of such a Godly community. The community helps individuals build resilience during tough times.
  4. Pastoral counseling (1 Peter 5:1-4): The pastor plays a critical role in the lives of his members. Among the pastoral roles are offering emotional and spiritual support. The church equips its members with skills such as stress management, among others. The pastors offer biblical counsel and practical guidance on how to address crises.
  5. Setting boundaries: There is a lot of wisdom in knowing how to set boundaries in one’s life. Boundaries can be financial, emotional, spiritual, social, among others. Some things that stress us are beyond our ability to do anything, while others call for us to shift responsibility where necessary.

Stress management skills are very critical in our lives. It is always beneficial to be equipped to handle various issues well before they arise. Let us continually pray and trust God to assist us during our most challenging times. Always lean on God’s provisions found in scripture and community to overcome stress.
