“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you.” 1 Peter 1:3,4.
What is the meaning of having an inheritance in the Lord? In our age today, many teachings allude to our inheritance being mainly, if not explicitly, material-based. They interpret the blessing of Abraham as camels and cattle, lands, and wealth. What exactly is this blessing supposed to mean? Peter reminds us that the blessing of God is beyond what we see here on earth. He points to the nature of it being where Jesus said we should store ours- in Heaven where no moth or thief or rust can harm. In this piece, consider poetically what it truly means to bless the Lord, who has given us an inheritance that is incorruptible, undefiled, never-fading, and stored up in Heaven for us!
It is Incorruptible.
It does not have a beginning or an end.
It is not material and formed of the things of earth.
It is beyond the rust of salt and water;
No thief can harm it,
No security company can guard it.
It guards the earthly and gives life to the base.
No human can give it to me,
And no human can take it from me.
This is my inheritance in Christ.
Oh yes.
It is also Undefiled,
With no spot or wrinkle.
Nothing blemish in it to render it useless;
Not the sin of yesterday,
Or the folly of tomorrow.
It knows not the stench of sin,
And the smell of death is far from its reach.
It is what makes white whiter,
And the fuller’s soap effect is found in it.
Satan has no hold of it,
Temptation is not a worry before it.
In this inheritance, my heart is purified,
Waiting for the day when I, like it,
Will be with my Lord, for ever undefiled.
But it gets better.
It is Never fading.
No bleach can alter this fiber.
It’s stronger than Jik or Harpic.
With it, I don’t need to fear the mixture.
You see,
Before eternity this Hope has always been
The light and fabric of all things eternal.
No scorching heat or detergent can spoil,
The strength of this ever-lasting truth.
‘Nothing can take away from it,
And nothing can add to it.
Its confidence is on never-fading truths,
And will last through never fading,
Never-ending ages.
More than that,
It is Heaven stored.
No barns or stores of earth can hold it.
Banks and funds can’t contain it.
It is heavenly in nature!
My Lord has gone there before me,
He said he was preparing a place for me.
No matter what may come my way,
Or worse still, what may not come my way,
I have a place I’m going,
A home!
A residence!
There where my Saviour is reigning,
That’s where he has set my inheritance.
And when he calls me home,
I will receive that which he has kept for me.
With the angels of God on high,
We shall be right there in his presence.
There where he has stored my reward,
Where I’ll no longer be sad,
And where worshiping won’t be hard.
I look forward to that day
When my Lord shall give to me
The inheritance long kept for me.
